This is a re-implementation of one of my earliest computer music instruments that was originally created in Csound 11 years ago.

I’m relatively new to Max, having spent no more than two months with it. I’m using Thing-a-day as a great excuse to learn as much about the environment as possible in a short period of time. Now that I have a handful of modular components under my belt, I’m hoping to move towards creating more musically interesting instruments and audio examples.

Today’s Max patch features a chaotic metronome, built using the chaos patcher from yesterday’s example. Looking at the picture above, the top half of the circuit is the metronome, which triggers an 8-step sequencer in the bottom half of the circuit. The audio example showcases the chaos metronome with three different settings: 0, 0.25 and 0.5.

I created a patcher in Max 5 that generates numbers using a simple chaos equation. This modular component can be applied to frequency, amplitude, quasi-tempos, etc… Today’s mp3 demonstrates chaos as it is applied to pitch.
The great thing about chaos, as opposed to a random number generator is that if you listen long enough you can hear micro patterns emerge, evolve and dissolve.

I built a second granular synthesizer in Max 5, reusing some of the components from my day 1 project. The audio source I used for the recording is that of an old broken music box.

Yesterday, I built a simple Karplus-Strong synth. I created a poly~ version of that synth and am using it as a component in today’s music box instrument.

So I’ve decided to participate in Thing-a-day 2009. Which means that starting yesterday, I will create ten things over ten days, and share it with the world. Here’s a repost from my entry from yesterday:
Single-Grain is a simple granular synthesizer/audio processor built with Max 5.
You can download the original Max 5 Single-Grain patches here. If you don’t own Max 5, but own a Mac, you can download the stand-alone application here. Mileage may vary.
